The Impact of Digital Tools on Assessment Practices in Online Learning Environments

Abstract. The proliferation of digital technologies in higher education has transformed the landscape of assessment, particularly within online learning environments. This study investigates the impact of digital tools on assessment practices, focusing on their role in enhancing pedagogical efficiency, student engagement, and learning outcomes. Drawing on a mixed-methods research design involving survey data and semi-structured interviews with university students and faculty, the study examines both the affordances and limitations of digital assessment technologies. The findings indicate that while digital tools facilitate greater flexibility, immediate feedback, and data-informed instruction, challenges such as academic integrity concerns, digital inequity, and assessment design persist. The study concludes by advocating for a pedagogically sound and inclusive approach to digital assessment integration.
