Abstract

Fantasy and an illusory sense of life are especially prominent in the writings of Amar Mitra. His novel Dhanpother Char (2007) offers an interpretation of the myth of the incarnation of ‘Kurma’ and the theory of the earth’s creation, as they have been passed down through folklore and oral traditions. The narrative is constructed through a blend of the idea of the divine creation of the world, mythical stories, and imaginative design. In portraying the old tortoise drifting on the waters of the drowned ‘char’, the author consciously weaves in the traditional beliefs of the Santhal community. However, within this vast shell of enchantment lies the harsh reality of Dhanpother Char. Exploitation and deprivation, illegal investments, and the trafficking of women—all of which are unacceptable to society—are presented from within the realm of reality, yet point to a surreal sense of denied rights. This article seeks to explore how Amar Mitra, through this novel, illustrates that there is no force more powerful than capitalist power in the world; it is this very power that enables a corporation like the "Green Wood Company" to buy Dhanpother Char, rendering the fishermen jobless. The women of the char are compelled to surrender their selves. The so-called environmental protection surrounding the char is actually a profit-earning avenue of multinational corporations. On the other hand, the eviction from the char symbolically reflects the mass evictions occurring across the world. While revealing all these subtle aspects of the novel, this article entitled ‘Amar Mitra’s Dhanpatir Char: Women’s World Spanning Six months’ seeks to portray the plight of the womenfolk as presented in the novel.
