The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Society

Abstract Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming today's society, and will continue to bring revolutionary changes in domains, such as health, education, and governance. In healthcare, AI improves diagnostic precision and individualizes treatment, while in education it fosters adaptive learning systems to better meet each student’s needs. Furthermore, AI enhances the evolution of smart cities through smart urban infrastructure and public services. But the same pace of progress in AI also brings significant downsides. There is a risk that economic inequality is likely to be exacerbated as automation causes jobs to be lost. However, this requires a connection to the Internet which is not readily available in low-income countries or remote areas of developed countries. A problem, however, is that issues of ethics and potential biases and privacy issues with the data mean that they must be developed with suitable regulation and oversight. What's more, AI's huge power usage and thus carbon emissions, cause environmental sustainability concerns. This paper examines two sides of AI adoption in society: the opportunities that AI offers for society-building and for individuals’ social participation, and the risks that such adoption poses, stressing the necessity for comprehensive policies and for ethical guidelines for fair and responsible development. Through a focus on overcoming these challenges, AI could be used to work for the good of all people.
