Strategies and Practices for Enhancing Reading Engagement and Comprehension: A Guideline for Preparatory Year Saudi Learners with Low English Proficiency

This paper presents a practical framework to enhance reading engagement and comprehension among Saudi preparatory year students with low English proficiency. Grounded in recent research and classroom observations, it identifies key challenges such as limited vocabulary, lack of background knowledge, and low motivation, and responds with a set of interactive, visually supported strategies. Organized into pre-reading, during-reading, and post-reading phases, techniques like Picture Walks, Think-Alouds, Text Chunking, and Creative Response Activities are highlighted. The study offers educators clear, evidence-based guidance to create more inclusive and effective reading instruction.
