Not So Toxic: Antarctic Pseudo-nitzschia Isolates Give Domoic Acid the Cold Shoulder
Here, the results are presented of five sampling expeditions to the Ross Sea, Antarctic Ocean, conducted between 2010 and 2022. DNA analysis of plankton net haul extracts was performed using metabarcoding. Pseudo-nitzschia species were found to be common in the region. During the most recent survey, over 17 strains of Pseudo-nitzschia were isolated, established in culture, and tested for domoic acid. While a high diversity of Pseudo-nitzschia species was observed, only moderate levels of domoic acid were detected.
