Review of the Abstract: The study on maternal mortality rate and some factors to maternal deaths in An Giang province, 2016-2020
Childbirth and pregnancy are significant contributors to mortality, illness, and disability among women of reproductive age. Aims: (1) To explore the key indicators of maternal mortality and the contributing causes in An Giang province between 2016 and 2020, and (2) To examine factors associated with both direct and indirect maternal deaths during this period. Study Design and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 42 recorded cases of maternal mortality in An Giang province from 2016 to 2020. Findings: The maternal mortality ratio was 25 per 100,000 live births, with 42.8% of the deaths occurring postpartum. Delays in seeking medical care were identified in 46.8% of cases, delays in receiving appropriate care in 43.5%, and delays in accessing healthcare services in 9.7%. Direct obstetric causes related to pregnancy, labor, and childbirth were significantly associated (p=0.013). Conclusions and Recommendations: It is crucial to improve communication with pregnant women to help them identify early signs of complications and ensure proper antenatal care. Efforts to enhance the quality of reproductive healthcare services, along with increased oversight of medical practices and health education at the community level, are vital.
