Gravitational wave emission from core-collapse supernovae
Invited talk Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei (October 24th and 25th, 2024) on the prospects of probing the central engine of core-collapse supernovae in the Local Universe. The most energetic events may be powered by Kerr black holes. Based on the first detection GW170817B of a black hole central engine at 5.5σ significance, we project a horizon distance up to 160 Mpc. This prospect is in striking agreement with a prescient earlier estimate of 150 Mpc (Cutler & Thorne 2002). Subject to event rates and finite duty cycles of the LIGO detectors H1 and L1, we expect, conservatively, the potential of a few detections per decade from energetic CC-SNe in the Local Universe.
