Implementing the Trapezoidal Rule in MATLAB A Graphical Interface for Numerical Integration
This article examines the application of the Trapezoidal Rule, a classical numerical integration method, through an interactive graphical user interface (GUI) developed in MATLAB to support educational purposes. The Trapezoidal Rule approximates the definite integral of a function by dividing the integration interval into smaller subintervals and summing the areas of trapezoids formed under the curve, offering a straightforward approach to estimate integrals when analytical solutions are impractical. The method's implementation in MATLAB is enhanced by a GUI that enables users to define the function, set integration limits, and adjust the number of subintervals, with the results displayed both numerically and graphically. The article outlines the algorithm's development, focusing on the setup of the GUI, the calculation process using the Trapezoidal Rule formula, and the visualization of the approximation. It emphasizes the method's educational benefits, such as providing an interactive and visual learning experience, fostering a deeper understanding of numerical integration, and offering flexibility for exploring various functions. Challenges, including the need for MATLAB proficiency and potential access limitations, are also discussed, underscoring the method's significance as a valuable tool for modern mathematical education.
