Aligning Neotoma's Cyberinfrastructure with CARE: First Steps
To steward their data ethically, repositories should work toward alignment with both FAIR principles of scientific data management (Wilkinson et al. 2016) and the CARE principles of Indigenous data governance (Carroll et al. 2020). Community curated data resources in the geosciences have made great progress toward achieving FAIR practices, but achieving CARE goals has been slower. The Neotoma Paleoecology Database has been working toward CARE through its participation in the Ethical Open Science for Past Global Change Data RCN. Here, we highlight key steps Neotoma has taken to both advance the FAIR principles as well as support potential Indigenous data interests in its technical infrastructure.
