Candid Core Framework: Enhancing Geospatial Metadata with Data Candor
The Candid Core Framework addresses the "Metadata Mirage" in geospatial data - the gap between finding data and understanding its fitness for purpose. Despite abundant geospatial data catalogs and standardized metadata like STAC, users struggle to determine if datasets meet their specific needs. This white paper introduces "Data Candor" as a principle of radical honesty in data evaluation and presents a structured framework of categories to capture evaluative information about datasets. The framework complements existing metadata standards by adding curated insights about dataset suitability, limitations, ethical considerations, and real-world applications. By moving beyond technical specifications to include context and practical guidance, the Candid Core Framework aims to build more trustworthy and usable geospatial data ecosystems. This publication includes the conceptual foundation, key categories, and implementation considerations for the Candid Core Framework.
