Production of Oil-Well Cement Using Local Raw Materials
Oil wells are typically encased and cemented with a specialised cement to stabilise the wellboreand isolate problematic zones, thereby maximising production. This research aims to develop aNovel cement using Type II clinker and locally abundant laterite. The laterite was oven-dried at200°C for 15minutes and analysed with X-ray Fluorescence prior to being milled and calcinedwith the clinker. The pure laterite exhibited an iron content of 42.552% (Fe2O 3 wt%), indicatingits potential as a corrective additive on Type II clinker. The newly formulated oil-well cement(POWCH5), demonstrated the following composition: 54.4727 wt% tricalcium silicate (C3S),17.2568 wt% dicalcium silicate (C2S), 5.8245 wt% tricalcium aluminate (C3A), 15.7196 wt%tetracalcium alumino ferrite (C4AF), and a specific surface area of 331 m²/kg. Thesecharacteristics, particularly the low C3A and high C4AF content, are advantageous for oil-wellcement, leading to extended setting times. The POWCH5 cement aligns with the Class G (MRS)Oil-well cement standards set forth by the American Petroleum Institute (API) Specification 10Aand corroborated by literature.
