Heartworm of dog. What it is?????
Introduction Dirofilaria immitis is one of the most significant filaroid nematodes that cause canine dirofilariosis. This worm is also known as the dog heartworm. The infected dogs and other mammalian animals have heartworm in their pulmonary arteries and right ventricle. Numerous mosquitoes from the genera Culex, Aedes and Anopheles spread the heartworm parasite (McCall et al., 2008). This worm belongs to the superfamily filaroidea and family onchocercidae (Taylor et al., 2015). In India the D. immitis have been reported from the dogs of northeastern states (Assam, Mizoram) (Borthakur et al., 2015). Several authors described that heartworm disease is as an emerging zoonosis (Robinson et al., 1977; Darrow and Lack, 1981; Pampiglione et al., 2001). The first case of human pulmonary dirofilariosis due to D. immitis in India was reported from Mumbai (Badhe and Sane, 1989). After that, several cases of human with D. immitis have been reported in India (Dam and Das, 2006).
