Academic Staff Participation in Politics and Its Impact on the University System in Nigeria
This study examines the impact of academic staff participation in politics on the Nigerian university system through an empirical investigation. The research utilizes a structured questionnaire as the sole instrument for data collection. The study employed a stratified random sampling technique to select 400 academic staff from universities across Nigeria, ensuring adequate representation of various academic ranks and faculties. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Logit regression analysis, ordered logistic regression, and factor analysis. Descriptive statistics reveal that 65% of academic staff participate in political activities, with political meetings and campaign involvement being the most common forms of engagement. Regression analysis indicates a significant negative relationship between political participation and academic productivity, with a decline in research output (β = -0.42, p < 0.05). Ordered logistic regression results show that political involvement significantly affects university governance, leading to administrative inefficiencies (p < 0.01). Factor analysis highlights ethical concerns such as favoritism in promotions, misuse of university resources, and conflicts of interest as key issues. It is conclude that academic staff participation in politics significantly impacts university system in Nigeria. The study recommends policy interventions to regulate political participation among university lecturers so as to ensure a balance between governance involvement and academic responsibilities.
