GOTHIC SHADOWS ON THE PATH TO ADULTHOOD

This paper investigates the symbolic intersection between Gothic literature and the psychological process of maturation, arguing that the genre offers a rich and often underappreciated framework for representing the turmoil of adolescence. Gothic fiction is replete with imagery of isolation, fear, the uncanny, and identity fragmentation—each reflecting the emotional and existential challenges young individuals face as they transition into adulthood. Rather than viewing Gothic elements merely as tools of horror, this study interprets them as metaphors for internal developmental struggles, including the fear of change, social alienation, sexual awakening, and the desire for autonomy. Key literary works, from classic texts like Frankenstein and Jane Eyre to contemporary young adult Gothic fiction, are analyzed through psychoanalytic and developmental lenses. The findings suggest that the Gothic provides a symbolic space where adolescents confront their darkest fears, reflect on their fragmented sense of self, and ultimately begin to integrate conflicting aspects of their identities. In doing so, the genre validates the emotional intensity of adolescence and offers readers a compelling narrative framework to process their own path toward psychological and emotional maturity.
