Digitization, TEI-Transcription, and Online Publication of the "Las Siete Partidas" with Gregorio López's Gloss (1555): Challenges and Progress in the "School of Salamanca" Project

The long-term project The School of Salamanca. A digital collection of sources and a dictionary of its juridical-political language is a collaboration between the Academy of Sciences and Literature ǀ Mainz, the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory, Frankfurt a.M., and the Goethe-University Frankfurt a.M. Our growing digital collection plays an important role in the legal history research by offering a text-image reading view with full text, lemmatized search and various downloadable formats of central texts of the School of Salamanca as well as important reference works on which the Salmantine authors relied when writing their books during the 16th and 17th century. One of the most ambitious goals in our project has been the digital edition of the reference work Las Siete Partidas (López 1555/de Castilla 1221–1284). The complexity of this task lies in the unique nature of the print edition 1555, which contains two simultaneous works by different authors comprising seven volumes and approximately 1750 pages: the original Castilian text by Alfonso X (written 1221–1284) and the Latin gloss by Gregorio López published 1555. Moreover, the structural layout of this dual-text edition presents significant challenges for its transcription and digital representation. In this poster, we present our workflow to address this challenge.
