Shakespeare as a Myth Maker: Breaking Rules, Shattering Stereotypes and Shaping Modern Story Telling
AbstractWilliam Shakespeare is one of the most important personalities inEnglish literature, not only because of his mastery of language and drama butalso because of his role as a mythmaker. His works were more than just thestories of the Elizabethan Era, and he crafted original narratives using hisunique structures, methods, and storytelling techniques, redefining the waymyths and stories were created. By breaking conventional rules andchallenging gender and societal stereotypes, Shakespeare laid the foundationfor modern storytelling structures. Shakespeare masterfully blended classicalmythology, history, and folklore to create archetypal heroes and anti-heroesthat remain timeless. His protagonists, from Hamlet’s introspection toMacbeth’s tragic fall, embody the monomyth by emphasizing transformationand self-discovery. His female characters, like Lady Macbeth and Cleopatra, challenge traditional femininity, subverting the damsel-in-distress trope andasserting agency in male-dominated narratives. He redefined storytelling byseamlessly mixing comedy with tragedy, integrating subplots forpsychological depth. Ahead of his time, Shakespeare employed techniquesnow common in modern literature and film, such as non-linear timelines, unreliable narrators, and self-referential stories. This paper exploresShakespeare's myth-making inheritance through the lens of Joseph Campbell’s“The Hero Journey” and “The Hero with Thousand Faces,” demonstratinghow his rule-breaking approach challenged literary traditions and shapedmodern narrative frameworks. By analyzing key plays, this study argues thatShakespeare's influence is beyond his time, establishing timeless story patternsthat continue to inform literature, film, and popular culture. In doing so, thepaper underscores Shakespeare’s enduring relevance as a storyteller whosemyths remain at the core of modern narrative evolution.Key Words: Shakespeare, Breaking Stereotypes, storytelling, Myths, Hero’sjourney, female character, plots, redefining narratives
