THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MNEMONIC DEVICES IN LEARNING NEW VOCABULARY: REEVALUATING STANDARDIZED TESTING
This research explores the role of mnemonic devices in vocabulary acquisition and their compatibility with standardized testing. Mnemonic techniques such as the keyword method, visual imagery, and the method of loci have been shown to enhance long-term memory retention by leveraging associative learning. However, standardized testing primarily evaluates rote memorization, which may not reflect the true cognitive benefits of these techniques. The study utilizes a mixed-method approach, combining experimental data from language learners and analysis of standardized test performance. Results indicate that while mnemonic strategies significantly improve vocabulary recall, their advantages are often underrepresented in standardized assessment formats. The findings suggest a need for assessment reform to accommodate diverse cognitive learning strategies. Furthermore, this study discusses how mnemonic devices influence cognitive load, information retrieval, and the psychological factors affecting language learning, offering a comprehensive perspective on their effectiveness.
