Political ecology in/of Sudan - Gold mining. Appendix 1B Source essay - Legislation
Establishing a claim to mineral resource extraction requires its connection to some kind of authoritative confirmation, for instance its legalization in frame of a codified system, which might or might not suffice to establish stable territorialization of such a claim. This essay moves from a description of Sudan's most important legal stipulations in that field and their contradiction to other forms of legitimization (through procedures, whether legal or not, through deals, through arrangements at the mining sites themselves). The aim is to illustrate the difference between a legal process, a negotiation fulfilling procedural needs, whether defined legally or transactionally, and finally the much more complex legitimization concerning anybody who might take issue with the claim.
