The Glimpse of Economy from Mauryan Period
Abstract: The Mauryan period is typically regarded as a turning point in the study of early Indian history. The remarkable Mauryan Economy is responsible for the Mauryas' nearly pan-Indian empire, which spanned from Afghanistan in the north to Karnataka in the south and from Kathiawad in the west to maybe north Bengal in the east. The Mauryan Empire, which formed around 321 B.C.E. and ended in 185 B.C.E., was the first pan-Indian empire, an empire that covered most of the Indian region. It spanned across central and northern India as well as over parts of modern-day Iran. This paper throws light on the economic structure in the Mauryan empire. It is important to study agriculture, trade, transport and revenue during Mauryan empire for understanding the overall growth of the empire and its development. In this context this paper aims to study in detail the economic structure of Mauryan Empire. The Mauryan administration was a pioneering system that laid the foundation for governance in ancient India. Its centralised structure, efficient bureaucracy, and emphasis on public welfare were remarkable for their time. The administrative principles and practices established by the Mauryans influenced subsequent Indian empires and continue to be studied as a significant chapter in the history of governance. The Mauryan administration’s focus on justice, welfare, and infrastructure development contributed to its prosperity and stability, making it one of the most powerful and enduring empires in Indian history.
