Instructional Skills of Physical Education Teachers in Implementing Special Program in Sports
Abstract: Physical education teachers, as key implementers of the Special Program in Sports (SPS), play a vital role in delivering meaningful learning experiences that develop learners into well-rounded 21st-century Filipino athletes capable of navigating both local and global sports contexts. This descriptive study aimed to assess the instructional skills of these teachers in curriculum, teaching, and assessment, grouped by variables such as sex, grade level, and sports specialization. Findings revealed that physical education teachers consistently demonstrated a high level of instructional skills across all evaluated areas, with no significant differences among groups. Recognizing the importance of continuous professional growth, the study highlights the value of capability-building plans to further empower these educators. To enhance skills—particularly in areas with lower scores—it proposes a comprehensive development program including seminar-workshops on innovative teaching methods like the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGFU) model, benchmarking of best practices, ICT refresher courses for digital lesson delivery, and implementation of Independent Cooperative Learning (ICL) through remedial classes. These initiatives aim to strengthen teachers’ expertise, improve teaching effectiveness, and ultimately maximize student outcomes in specialized sports education.
