Extension of Heron's Formula to a Spherical Triangle

We present an extension of the classical Heron’s formula, traditionally applied to planar triangles for calculating their areas, to spherical triangles formed by great circles on a sphere. We begin with a review of preliminary concepts and some fundamental results in spherical geometry, after which we develop the spherical version of Heron’s formula.

Abstract

We present an extension of the classical Heron’s formula, traditionally applied to planar triangles for calculating their areas, to spherical triangles formed by great circles on a sphere. We begin with a review of preliminary concepts and some fundamental results in spherical geometry, after which we develop the spherical version of Heron’s formula.
