The gamma-ray view on supernovae
Supernova light originates mostly in radioactivity of 56Ni, an isotope that falls close to the optimum configuration of protons and nucleons as they form an atomic nucleus. At the photosphere of a supernova this radioactive energy however emerges as optical emission, down-scattered by material of the massive supernova envelope.
