Deconstructing Draupadi: Power Dynamics, Resistance, and Marginalization
This article examines Mahasweta Devi’s Draupadi through a deconstructive lens, highlighting the intersections of caste, class, and gender. Dopdi Mejhen, the tribal protagonist, embodies resistance against systemic oppression while challenging the traditional notions of power and victimhood. Drawing parallels to the Mahabharata’s Draupadi, Mahasweta Devi reimagines her as a symbol of defiance, demonstrating how marginalized voices disrupt dominant narratives. Dopdi’s resistance transforms her vulnerability into empowerment, critiquing patriarchal and casteist structures that perpetuate injustice. This article explores themes of language, embodiment, and intersectionality, showing how Devi’s story subverts established narratives and redefines agency.
