Advances in the Treatment of Acute Bronchitis
Acute bronchitis is a self-limiting inflammatory condition of the bronchi, usually resulting from viral infections and presenting predominantly as cough. Despite its typically benign nature, it contributes significantly to outpatient visits and unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions, raising public health concerns due to antimicrobial resistance. This article provides a detailed review of the etiology, clinical features, diagnostic criteria, treatment modalities, and prevention strategies for acute bronchitis. We emphasize evidence-based approaches, particularly those endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to promote effective management and antibiotic stewardship.
