[ASCB CellBio 2024] What is Image Metadata Anyway? Hands On Workshop for Cell Biology Image Data Life Cycle

This talk was presented as part of a BioImaging North America hosted workshop entitled What is Image Metadata Anyway? Hands On Workshop for Cell Biology Image Data Life Cycle, which was held a the ASCB-EMBL CellBio 24 Annual Meeting. Workshop schedule: 5 min Overview describing why to care about image metadata? 40 min Utilization of Recommended Metadata for Biological Images (REMBI)-based template spreadsheets to capture Experimental and Sample Description Metadata in a machine-readable manner. 30 min Community-developed checklists for publishing images and image analyses 15 min Tips & tricks and Questions & Answers. Workshop summary: The workshop included a hands-on tutorial based on a real-life scientific paper to teach attendees how to effectively and easily create both human and machine-readable documentation on how the experiment was performed. The workshop discussed all aspects of the experiment, from sample preparation to image acquisition, image analysis and publication. After an initial introduction providing general background on Research Data Management and Sharing, the First part of the tutorial concentrated on using REMBI-compatible template spreadsheets extracting relevant information from the paper and representing it in a Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR). The second part of the tutorial, concentrated on how to use the published community checklists to maximize the quality of your published image figures and analysis. The target audience is cell biologists, imaging professionals, and educators using light microscopy techniques to generate quantitative image data. In both parts of the tutorial, examples will be drawn from Wagner, et al. Medin co-aggregates with vascular amyloid-β in Alzheimer’s disease. Nature 612, 123–131 (2022).
