O znamienitym dipterologu o polskich korzeniach Józefie Porczyńskim (1848-1916) i jego działalności naukowej na terenie imperium rosyjskiego
Józef Porczyński (1848-1916) is a prominent dipterist of Polish origin who is one of the founders of applied (agricultural and medical) entomology in Russian empire in times when Poland was annexed by imperialistic neighboring states from 1772 to 1918. We present the biographic notes and the genealogical tree of Józef showing that for centuries the Porczyński family was Polish and catholic and lived in Połock voivodeship. His father Alojzy (1812-1878) was a military doctor and often changed place of work. Józef was born in 1848 near Charkov (now Ukraine) and because of that is treated sometimes as Ukrainian entomologist. Since 1867/1868 to death he lived and worked in Sankt Petersburg. He is an author of more than 120 publications, descriptions of 10 new genera and 130 species of insects new to science, active member of the Russian Entomological Society since 1872. European dipterologists in recognition of his important contributions to study medical and agricultural flies dedicated for him 15 patronyms (1 genus and 14 species).
