Abstract

In 2025, a review of the current evidence implies from the timings provided by DNA studies that the dog was domesticated in Siberia 23,000 years ago by ancient North Siberians. The dog later dispersed from Siberia with the migration of people’s eastwards into America. Thereafter, humans produced innumerable breeds and trained them to perform a great variety of useful services and sometimes dubious actions, including as guard dogs trained to instill fear in people and as sports dogs taught to fight other dogs to the death. Dogs have lived and worked with humans in so many roles—hunting, herding, protecting sheep and cattle, guarding people and property, rescuing people, providing companionship, and so forth—often earning them the title 'Man’s Best Friend.' Dogs’ actions mimic human concepts of love and friendship, leading many dog owners to view their pets as family members."*
