Fanowskie ostrzeżenia

Fannish Warnings Chapter Fannish Warnings presents an analysis of warnings that are part of fan fiction’s paratexts. The author creates the image of „appropriate” fanfic based on excerpts from 570 author’s notes published in Polish fandom of „Harry Potter” on Fanfiction.net and ArchiveOfOurOwn.org. Their careful reading allows to create a dozen categories of warnings: blank, about erotic and violent scenes, about rating, about theme, about events, about character’s death, about characters, about type of relationship, about setting, with general description and about the construction of the text, about its low quality and the presence of expletives. Blank warnings show that the pattern of autor’s notes are copied between different publication sites.Including erotic scenes presents the importance of the website’s rules.Together with warnings about violence they indicate that a teenage reader is considered a probable one, which is confirmed by warnings about ratings. Additionally, they allow one to expand their reader group by denoting such scenes as supplemental and describing their position in the text so that the reader may avoid them. The warnings about theme show the importance of the canonical text, which is confirmed by the ones about characters and setting. The warnings about the character’s death clearly signify the fans’ aversion to killing off characters which is connected with the character-centric nature of fan culture. The changes within the warnings about the type of relationship illustrate the influence of factors outside of the fandom. The warnings with general description of the text and about its construction prove that even within fairly uniform group of fans the images of “appropriate” text are diversified. The warnings about low quality and the presence of expletives show that fannish text are considered by their creators literary texts. An encapsulating look at these categories reveals that the ideal for the “appropriate” fannish text in Harry Potter fandom is the canonical text.
