Functional Electrical Stimulation in Neurorehabilitation: A Systematic Review of Applications in Spinal Cord Injury and Stroke
This systematic review examines the role of functional electrical stimulation (FES) in neurorehabilitation, focusing on its application for patients with spinal cord injuries and stroke. Utilizing the Synthory.AI service, a comprehensive literature search was conducted across PubMed and PubMed Central™, adhering to PRISMA guidelines. Eleven studies meeting the inclusion criteria were analyzed, highlighting FES's efficacy in enhancing motor function, muscle strength, and functional independence. Despite promising results, challenges such as small sample sizes and methodological limitations were noted. Future research should aim to address these issues by exploring larger, diverse cohorts and developing standardized outcome measures. The review underscores the transformative potential of FES in improving recovery and quality of life for individuals with neurological injuries.
