Distribution of Printing and Publishing, Regional Income, and Distance in Gravity Model: The Case of Japan

Abstract: This study examines the relationship between printing and publishing distribution, regional income, and distance in each prefecture every five years from 1990 to 2015, using the gravity model. Since printing and publishing is decreased in the recent two decades in Japan, weakened cultural promotion especially in rural area is worried. The results reveal the following three points. First, the traditional gravity model of cultural economics satisfies the distribution. Second, income in origin is not satisfied if the specialty in each prefecture is considered using a fixed effect model. Third, the effect of introducing the Internet is shown complement, not as a substitute for printing and publishing. Keywords: Printing and Publishing, Gross Prefectural Products, Distribution, Japan JEL Classification Number: O53, Z10
