Sustainable Traditions: Kerala's Agricultural Heritage

Abstract: India has a rich tradition of agricultural practices that have been passed down through generations. Traditional agricultural practices have played a significant role in ensuring food security, environmental sustainability, and biodiversity conservation. In Kerala, a state known for its unique geographical and climatic conditions, traditional farming methods have been deeply integrated with local culture and ecological balance. Sustainable agriculture in Kerala acknowledges the interconnectedness of human activities and natural systems, promoting a holistic approach that balances ecological, economic, and social factors The paper explores the importance of these methods in Kerala, examining techniques like Pokkali farming, below-sea-level farming in Kuttanad, and Kaipad farming. It assesses the sustainability of these practices in the face of contemporary challenges such as climate change and socio-economic transformations. The findings highlight the necessity of merging traditional knowledge with modern innovations to ensure the future sustainability of Kerala's agricultural sector.
