Geochemical dataset of mineral and whole-rock compositions of mantle peridotites from the northern Fizh massif in the Oman ophiolite
We report the whole-rock major and trace element compositions, and mineral major element compositions of peridotites from the Fizh massif in the northern Oman ophiolite. Detailed analytical methods are described in the following sections. Mineral chemistryThe major element compositions of primary minerals (olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, and spinel) were analyzed by electron probe microanalysis and wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EPMA-WDS; JEOL JXA-8600SX) at Niigata University, Japan. The operating conditions of the EPMA were as follows: 15 kV accelerating voltage, 13 nA beam current, 1 μm beam diameter, and ZAF matrix corrections. Whole-rock geochemistryWhole-rock major element compositions of 51 peridotite samples were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (Rigaku RIX3000) at Niigata University following the method of Takahashi and Shuto (1997) and optimized for ultramafic rocks (Takazawa et al., 2003; Kanke & Takazawa, 2014). Whole-rock trace element compositions of 172 peridotite samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) (Agilent 7500a) at Niigata University. Whole-rock sample powders (0.05 g) were dissolved in HNO3–HF on a hotplate and diluted by a factor of 5000 with 5% HNO3. The spinel did not completely dissolve, but the low spinel abundance and its low contents of incompatible trace elements mean incomplete dissolution of spinel should not affect the results. Four elements (In, Tm, Re, and Bi) were used as internal standard elements, and an external standard (BHVO-1) was used to correct for instrumental drift. The analytical method was described by Takazawa et al. (2003).
