Improving Technical Writing and Presentation Skills of TVET Students: A Case Study of Selected Polytechnics in Benue State, Nigeria

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), as established in the National Education Policy equips learners with practical skills essential for self-sufficiency, employability, and integration into the workforce. It is widely acknowledged as a fundamental catalyst for socio-economic transformation, driving national growth and technological advancement. This educational approach not only prepares the learners for specific careers but also contributes significantly to a nation's overall development by creating a skilled labor force capable of meeting the evolving demands of industries. However, the ability to compose a coherent technical report writing and deliver effective presentation skills are significant areas of weakness for TVET students particularly in their terminal classes. This study aims to investigate the underlying factors contributing to these challenges. Data for the study were collated using a well-structured questionnaire tagged “ITWPSTS-Q”, comprising Sections A – E, with an Open-ended research questions guided the study for a holistic information gathering. Three TVET institutions in Benue State were sampled, each from Federal, State and Privately owned. A total of 132out of expected 150 respondents participated in the study. Research instrument adopted graphical representations as a statistical tool used to interpret the data. The study revealed difficulties in organizing ideas, poor communication skills, stage fright, and inadequate knowledge of presentation tools as a major challenge. In light of the foregoing; organizing regular skill-building seminars and workshops, having access to resource materials, giving regular assignments by Lecturers and Instructors, mock presentation exercise, and one-on-one mentoring are viable recommendations made to enhance competence and foster enthusiasm in both reporting and presentation skills amongst TVET students.
