BUILDING AN APPROPRIATE RECYCLING SYSTEM FOR UZBEKISTAN
Uzbekistan's rapid population growth and economic development have significantly increased municipal solid waste generation, creating a need for effective waste management strategies. This study evaluates the waste recycling system in Tashkent by analyzing waste flow, stakeholder roles, and systemic inefficiencies. Using data from the ADB’s 2012 evaluation, Maxsustrans databases, semi-structured interviews, and field observations, the study found that the 2017 recycling rate was lower than prior estimates, with most recycling operations functioning at a basic, informal level. Approximately 180 tons of recyclable waste are processed daily through 110 recycling markets, yet weak enforcement of government policies hinders system efficiency.
