Citizen Science Scan 2023: Landscape and Evolution of Citizen Science in Belgium

The Citizen Science Scan 2023 provides insight into the state, nature and evolutions of the citizen science landscape in Belgium. To this end, we list and analyse activecitizenscience initiatives for a specific baseline year (2023). The report analyses 150 projects and answers questions such as: Which topics come up frequently and which topics are on the rise? Who are the initiators and who are their funders? How many partners does a project have and what expertise do they bring in? How many citizens participate and how do they contribute to the research? ... In this way, the Citizen Science Scan offers for the first time an overall picture of citizen science in Belgium. In order to also map evolutions over different reference years, we carry out this scan periodically. This first edition of the Citizen Science Scan looks at citizen science in Belgium for reference year 2023. This report includes the methodology behind this inventory and the insights resulting from the analyses, as well as recommendations for policymakers and researchers.
