Prasat Mueang Khaek: Khmer Civilization in the Thai Landscape
Prasat Mueang Khaek, located in Khok Kok Village, Sung Noen District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, is a significant ancient Khmer Hindu sanctuary built during the 10th–11th centuries CE (15th–16th Buddhist centuries). Constructed as a Shaivite temple, it features a central sanctuary with a Shiva Linga, libraries at the corners, and an enclosing wall with decorated gopura. The temple is adorned with intricate lintel carvings, including depictions of Vamana Avatar, Durga slaying Mahishasura, and Indra riding Airavata each reflecting symbolic narratives of divine protection and cosmic balance. As a testament to Khmer artistic excellence and Hindu cosmology, Prasat Mueang Khaek stands as a vital archaeological and cultural heritage site, offering insights into Southeast Asia’s religious and architectural history.
