Perceptions of the Severity of Climate Change on Lives and Livelihoods: A Case Study in the Darjeeling Himalayas, India

A predictable climate influences the structure of daily life. Temperature, pressure systems, and rainfall all experience constant fluctuations, affecting trees, rivers, glaciers, sea level, and agricultural production. All of this gives context to the fluctuations in material life. The majority of people in the Darjeeling Himalayas believe that average temperatures are rising and the precipitation patterns are changing abruptly. Significant changes have been observed in the duration, amount, and form of precipitation. Previously, precipitation was in the form of snow (solid), but now people are experiencing liquid precipitation (rainfall) more, even in the winter. The Himalayan people perceived that this was the reason for the squeezing of the snowfall season. The region's water availability has decreased as a result, and people are already beginning to experience a shortage of water. Most people in the region agree that there has been a shift in the timing of plant inflorescence and fruit maturation. The people have noticed that the productivity of the soil is decreasing. Increased pest infestations and animal attacks have also affected the crops and local communities in the study area. Because of these conditions, the residents have had significantly to modify their traditional way of life Some of these strategies have been identified as part of the efforts to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change in the Darjeeling Himalayan region. They represent practical responses to the alarming rate of climate change. These must be properly assessed, documented, looked into, and improved with the help of formal scientific and technological inputs if they are to be feasible and acceptable to the wider public.
