Gender Diversity in the Manufacturing Sector in Karnataka, India: An analysis and the Way Forward

Abstract: This paper aims to assess the current state of gender diversity in the manufacturing industry and to propose a framework for improving the gender ratio. The study investigates the level of gender diversity in industrial firms in Karnataka and proposes strategies for increasing gender diversity. The study also recognizes the difficulties that women face throughout major life transitions such as marriage and childbirth. The study is backed by both primary and secondary data. Primary data were collected from working professionals in the manufacturing business. Secondary data came from published sources. This paper has derived and detailed the following major findings based on the primary views of practicing leaders and secondary data: high attrition rate, family commitments and social pressure, qualification enrichment, maternity benefits, ergonomics, flexible work environment, amenities, roles, and responsibilities, maintaining professional relationships, sabbatical leave, education system, quota/reservation, night shift, and benchmarking. According to this report, just 12% of women were employed by manufacturing firms in Karnataka, which is lower than in neighboring states. Women's low employment rates are caused by a variety of factors. According to current research, in order to increase women's participation in the manufacturing business at both the entry-level and leadership levels, it is critical to create a positive environment, inspire interest in STEM education, and enact tough legislation to combat unconscious bias. Based on the study's findings, a framework has been developed to improve gender diversity, with the following focus areas: organizational support, policy changes, equal opportunities, ecosystem, competency development, mentoring and leadership development, educational support, and government intervention. Keywords: Gender Diversity, Manufacturing Sector in India, Organizational Studies
