Reducing Foreign Language Anxiety through Mindfulness Meditation: A Mixed-Methods Study of Indonesian ESL Learners in Singapore
This study aims to determine the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation in reducing Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA) in ESL learners, and helping them enhance language skills. Through a mixed methods approach, the research actualized twelve face-to-face sessions of mindfulness in four weeks with the ESL learners showing the signs of FLA. The quantitative data from the before and after the intervention determined a significant decline in the FLA. The data from pre-and post-intervention revealed a significant decrease in FLA levels and improvements in language proficiency, particularly in speaking skills. The results/feedback highlighted increased focus, engagement, and a positive shift in classroom dynamics. The results reveal a decrease of FLA with improved language ability. The research demonstrates the potency of the mindfulness spaces in reducing anxiety, as well as in boosting the language competence.
