Assessment of Social Studies Teaching Resources on Acquisition of Small Scale Businesses and Leadership Skills among Secondary School Students in Nigeria
This study examines the effectiveness of Social Studies teaching resources in promoting small-scale business entrepreneurship and leadership skills among secondary school students in Nigeria. Social Studies, as an essential discipline, equips students with critical competencies for economic self-reliance and societal leadership. The integration of digital tools and experiential learning methods in Social Studies fosters collaboration, critical thinking, and decision-making skills, which are crucial for entrepreneurship and leadership. The paper draws on recent research highlighting the impact of technology-mediated platforms, such as social media and virtual learning environments, in enhancing student engagement and understanding (Garcia & Weiss, 2023; Johnson & Smith, 2023). Furthermore, the constructivist learning theory and Vygotsky's socio-cultural framework underpin the research, emphasizing knowledge construction through social interactions and problem-solving. Methodologically, the paper reviews relevant literature, drawing comparisons with international best practices and incorporating insights from teachers through brainstorming sessions. The paper suggest that Social Studies teaching resources, when aligned with curriculum objectives and supported by adequate teacher training, significantly enhance students' entrepreneurial and leadership capabilities. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, limited teacher preparedness, and traditional pedagogical approaches hinder the full realization of these resources' potential. The study concludes by recommending investments in digital tools, teacher professional development, and community-based learning opportunities to foster a more interactive and practical Social Studies education that prepares students for the demands of the 21st century.
