The Mahatma Gandhi NREGA sponsors a number of programmes to assist rural residents who are below the poverty line in creating wage jobs and productive assets. MGNREGA is a powerful instrument for ensuring inclusive growth in rural India through its impact on social protection, livelihood security and democratic empowerment. In the scheme central and state government share was 75 percent and 25 percent respectively. MGNREGA differentiates itself from earlier welfare schemes by taking a grassroots-driven approach to employment generation.
