THE INTERSECTION OF SCOLIOSIS AND DENTAL HEALTH: BEST PRACTICES FOR COMPREHENSIVE CARE
Scoliosis, originating from the Greek term “Skoliosis” meaning crooked or bent, represents a significant spinal deformity characterized by an abnormal lateral curvature. This curvature results from the rotation of the vertebrae in one or more segments, creating a three-dimensional deformity that can affect various planes of the spine. To be classified as scoliosis, the spinal deviation must exceed 10° on a posteroanterior (PA) radiograph. The severity and nature of scoliosis can vary, ranging from mild deviations to more pronounced curves that impact spinal alignment and function. Accurate diagnosis and assessment are crucial for effective management and treatment of scoliosis, which may involve a combination of monitoring, bracing, and surgical interventions depending on the degree of curvature and associated symptoms.
