LINGUISTIC POLICIES FOR LANGUAGE PROTECTION IN THE STATE OF AMAZONAS, BRAZIL

The aim of this article is to reflect on the language policy of the state of Amazonas and public educational policies aimed at guaranteeing the protection of indigenous languages in Amazonas, based on a discussion of the implications and prospects of State Law No. 6.303/2023, which provides for the recognition of indigenous languages spoken in the state of Amazonas as intangible cultural heritage, establishes the co-officialization of sixteen indigenous languages and institutes the State Policy for the Protection of Indigenous Languages of the State of Amazonas. From a methodological point of view, this is a literature review and documentary research, with qualitative data analysis, so that the data sources for this study included academic literature, government and institutional documents, which deal directly with language policies, indigenous school education and State Law No. 6.303/2023. It was observed that there is still no full guarantee of the protection of indigenous languages through language planning for indigenous school education, despite the creation of State Law No. 6.303/2023 in Amazonas, which still represents the beginning of progress in terms of public policies. However, it can be concluded that, despite advances in indigenous language policy with protection actions, the practical implementation of these policies faces obstacles that include bureaucracy, lack of financial resources and the need for greater involvement of indigenous communities.
