The Historical City of Pasargad and Its Role in Urban Development Plans

Abstract:Pasargad, the capital of Cyrus the Great and the site of his final victory over Astyages, the king of the Medes, is known as the Cradle of the Persians. This city was an important ceremonial capital, used for religious rituals, coronations, receiving robes of office, and officially proclaiming the rule of Achaemenid kings, giving their reign a legal foundation. In recent years, urban expansion, agricultural development, and unsustainable exploitation of water and soil resources have posed threats to this significant historical site. However, with the implementation of conservation programs and appropriate utilization, these threats can be transformed into opportunities. This research examines Pasargad in the context of urban development plans. Given the cultural and historical importance of Pasargad as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the primary objective of this study is to analyze the challenges and opportunities in preserving and developing this historical site in the pursuit of sustainable urban development. The aim is to contribute to local and regional urban growth while preserving its historical monuments. The findings suggest that, with its cultural and historical significance, Pasargad can serve as a successful model for attracting tourism and strengthening cultural diplomacy. However, multiple challenges, including vulnerability to environmental changes, pressures from urban development, and a lack of financial and human resources, can hinder the preservation and development of this historical site. Additionally, public unawareness of its cultural and historical values is another major obstacle. The results show that by leveraging modern technologies, strengthening international cooperation, and raising public awareness, the potential of Pasargad can be harnessed for sustainable development. This research aims to provide solutions for the optimal management and preservation of this historical complex, which can serve as a model for other historical areas worldwide. Using both analytical and field methods, this study explores the challenges and opportunities in the preservation and development of Pasargad as a model for sustainable urban development. Keywords : Pasargad, Sustainable Urban Development, UNESCO World Heritage, Historical Monument Preservation, Cultural Tourism, Cultural Diplomacy.
