MORPHSIS

MORPHSIS: MORPHSIS is an image analysis tool for quantifying microstructural features of materials. Based on an intensity contrast approach, the MATLAB written software segments images and consequently quantifies features present in images. MORPHSIS was created to analyse environmental barrier coatings (EBCs). For these ceramic coating systems, quantifying the changes to microstructural features is important to understand their evolution in extreme environments. EBCs perform in high-temperature, steam containing environments and consist of complex microstructures, containing features such as oxides, pores and interfacial roughness. MORPHSIS enables the quantification of these features with automated calculations of thickness, size or distribution. As such, MORPHSIS has facilitated a step-change in the analysis of EBC systems. Using its statistical image analysis approach, the software has quantified how microstructures change in a range of environments, and informed the development of improved EBCs. Going further: This software sees an exciting future in developing both its features and its use cases. While created for EBCs, the package is adaptable and follows a methodology capable of evaluating any coating system. Code Access: The software is not openly accessible due to commercial sensitivity. If you would like to collaborate or feel you have an image/application that would benefit from such image analysis, then please get in touch. Abstract
