Fuzûlî Leylâ vü Mecnûn'u Ne Zaman ve Neden Yazdı?

When and Why Did Fużūlī Write Leylā and Mecnūn? Abstract: Fużūlī (d. 1555-56) is not only one of the most prominent names in classical Turkish literature but also in the literature of the entire Turkish-speaking world. When the name Fużūlī is mentioned, two works immediately come to mind: the Turkish Dīvān and the mes̱nevī Leylā and Mecnūn. In this respect, every detail about Fużūlī and his works, especially these two works, is important. During our work to translate Leylā and Mecnūn into contemporary Turkish, we found that there are very different findings, evaluations, comments and claims in the studies conducted by literary historians, researchers, and academics so far about when and why he wrote his work. In this study, the two main issues in question are addressed under two main headings as problems, and what has been said throughout the historical process, from poet biographies to contemporary researchers, is determined, and finally, our personal evaluations about these issues are included. When we investigated the manuscripts of the work in detail related to the subject, we found two of the oldest manuscripts, one of which was written while Fużūlī was still alive, which were not used in any previous Leylā and Mecnūn publications, making this an unexpected outcome of our study. Another unexpected but negative outcome was the observation that especially recent academics, without feeling the need to research and go back to the primary sources, included certain information in their works, causing the rapid spread of incorrect, incomplete, or insufficiently supported information. It is thought-provoking that, because of these frivolous oversights, claims without scientific basis or foundation have become an academic reality and have found their way into literary histories, encyclopedia entries, and textbooks.
