Before Small Wars. Early Thoughts on the Strategy of Colonial Warfare
The essay aims at identifying the British sources of C. E. Callwell’s Small Wars and addressing the prevailing opinion of an earlier generation of theorists dealing with the strategic level of colonial warfare. Due consideration is given to the interplay between the theory of regular warfare and the practice of irregular operations in shaping the nascent theory of small wars.
