Spaces of Passage and Consumption: Greek Ports and the Commerce of the Transatlantic Movement (1890–1930)

Greek transatlantic emigration in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries integrated the national port cities of embarkation into new travel routes and broader maritime networks. This opened up unprecedented economic opportunities for all the economic actors involved in organizing a large-scale, temporary labour movement and maintaining transnational links between Greece and the United States. Functioning as logistical spaces, these ports underwent significant economic development and demonstrated their ability to adapt to ever-changing conditions. This paper sheds light on the commerce of transatlantic migration that developed in Greek ports after the arrival of the Austro-Americana Company and the establishment of national steamship lines in the early 1900s. It traces the circulation of migrant money in local markets offering reception services and travel products, and highlights the transformative effects of labour migration on the economies of transit cities.
