Revision and description of fossil scales from the Cretaceous Marizal Formation (Tucano Basin, Northeastern Brazil)
Disarticulated scales of actinopterygians are commonly found in the Mesozoic fossil record. On the other hand, the description of scales is less detailed and valued when they are associated to articulated skeletons. In the present work, we review the scales of known taxa from the Marizal Formation (Lower Cretaceous, Northeastern Brazil) and describe three new morphotypes. The new morphotypes consist of true cycloid scales, not related to any of the taxa previously described for this unit, highlighting the paleontological potential of the unit and the importance of describing isolated material.
