Beyond the Closet and the Church: Decoding Homophobia in Black Queer Cinema

This essay provides a critical analysis of the representation of religion and homophobia in Black queer cinema through an examination of the films "Rafiki" (2018), "Moonlight" (2016), "Pariah" (2011), and "Play the Devil" (2016). Using a case study approach, this essay combines the narrative, semiotic, and thematic analysis of these films to reveal how Black queer cinema critiques the intersecting oppressions of racism with homophobia, and religious bigotry, while also celebrating the resilience and joy of Black queer communities. This essay shows that Black queer cinema has the potential to emerge as a crucial platform for contesting conventional religious narratives and homophobic attitudes, by highlighting ways in which these cinematic works offer fresh ethnographic perspectives on spirituality, identity, and socio-political resistance.
